Sovereign Hill,  Ballarat, Bendigo and surroundings are surreal places you should not miss whenever you happen to visit Victoria. Perfectly preserved nineteenth century architecture, wide streets, tiny miners’ cottages, hauntingly beautiful churches, fascinating cemeteries, and amazing monuments and statues all contribute to the region’s sense of history and heritage.  
The minute I got out of the bus I felt I was taking part in a Western movie: I wandered in a sort of open-air museum reproducing a gold-rush town. Life stopped in the 1850s. Even the people in period costume “inhabited” the town as townpeople, soldiers and miners mingled with us: the  astonished "contemporary visitors"....

For the ones who don't know what vegemite is .. let me briefly explain it … It’s a thick black Australian food made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. Australians seem to love it. Imagine: Jars of Vegemite are stocked in their cupboards ready to be spread on their daily bread! However, as soon as you open up the jar, I would suggest: First you smell it and then you taste it! I have never eaten Vegemite: Its smell was for me a useful sign...
